Why Grounding Is Critical in a 110kV Power Substation
2026-09-19 10:52:45

Grounding is one of the most important safety systems in a 110kV power substation. It provides a controlled path for fault current, lightning current, and unwanted electrical energy, helping protect personnel, equipment, and the surrounding power network.

During a fault, high current may flow through equipment frames, metallic structures, cables, or the ground. Without an effective grounding system, dangerous touch and step voltages may develop around the substation, creating serious risks for operators and maintenance personnel.

A typical grounding system includes buried conductors, grounding grids, equipment bonding, lightning protection connections, and transformer neutral grounding. The design must consider soil resistivity, fault current, site dimensions, equipment layout, and local technical requirements.

Site conditions have a major impact on grounding performance. Rocky terrain, dry soil, coastal areas, and high-resistivity locations may require deeper electrodes, additional conductors, or improved grounding arrangements.

The grounding system must also be coordinated with surge arresters, protection relays, cable shields, and control equipment. Testing during commissioning is essential to confirm that grounding resistance and safety limits meet the design requirements.

Grounding should never be treated as a minor construction detail. It is a core part of 110kV power substation safety. A properly designed system reduces electrical risk, supports correct protection operation, and limits the impact of faults and lightning events.
